Hot Buttered Rum is traditionally served at the holiday, with warm flavors that embody the spirit of fall and winter holidays. Hot buttered rum dates back to colonial America, as rum was plentiful and thought to strengthen the body.
Each family had their own variations of Hot Buttered Rum. This vintage recipes has been in my family for generations.
Alterations to this recipe include using ground nutmeg instead of the ground cinnamon. Additionally, use organic coconut oil instead of butter for a healthier option.
Add a dollop of vanilla ice cream to make this cocktail a dessert drink!
Add an additional half ounce to ounce to make the alcohol content higher.

Hot Buttered Rum Cocktail Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 Quart Apple Cider
- ¼ Cup Dark Corn Syrup
- 2 TBSP Butter
- ¼ TSP Cinnamon
- 6 Ounces Dark Rum
- 6 Cinnamon Sticks For garnish
Instructions
- In a large saucepan, combine butter, apple cider, and dark corn syrup. Heat until hot and steaming but do not boil.
- In 6 mugs, add 1 ounce of dark rum, a sprinkle of ground cinnamon and a cinnamon stick into each mug.
- Fill each mug with equal amounts of the hot cider mixture, stir and enjoy!
Eat well. Live fully. Feed your soul with good food and drink.
